Before Breakaway was a firm, it was a frustration. I sat across from advisors who talked past me, and I promised myself that if I ever did this, I would do it completely differently.
Patrick Traverse did not grow up talking about wealth. He grew up playing hockey. For most of his life, the game was everything, the discipline, the grind, the team, the pursuit of something bigger than himself. And when his career took off, so did something he was not prepared for: money. Real money, the kind his family had never had to manage before. That is when the advisors showed up.
Patrick remembers the feeling well. Sitting across from professionals who spoke a language he did not know. Being recommended products he did not understand. Asking questions and walking away more confused than when he came in. Nobody took the time to explain things clearly. Nobody made sure he actually understood what was happening with his own financial life. He was the client, and he felt completely alone in the room.
He did not know what he did not know, and the people who were supposed to help him did not seem all that interested in changing that. So he figured it out himself.
When Patrick's playing career ended in 2012, he made a decision that surprised some people. He went into financial services. Not because it was the obvious next step, but because he had lived the problem firsthand and could not stop thinking about it.
He joined an established firm to learn the industry from the inside, and what he found confirmed everything he suspected. Most advisors were focused on products, not people. They sat on the outside of their clients' lives, offered guidance, and waited for information to come to them. The client was still doing the coordinating, still carrying the burden, still left to figure out the parts that mattered most. Patrick saw what was missing, and he started building toward something different.
Breakaway Financial Group was born from a simple belief: nobody should feel alone when it comes to their financial life. Patrick built the firm around the entrepreneur, the business owner who is brilliant at what they do but drowning in the financial complexity behind it, because that is who he was. Someone with real opportunity in front of them, surrounded by professionals who were not really in their corner.
At Breakaway, the model is different by design. We do not sit on the outside giving advice. We get inside the business, handle the work, and act on it, so there is one partner, no coordination burden, no information gaps, and someone in the room when it matters. Patrick calls it being an Entrepreneurial Wealth Agent. Not an advisor. An agent, someone who does the work, carries the weight, and shows up.
Patrick will tell you that Breakaway is not just a business. It is personal. He thinks about his own family, his kids, and what it would mean for them to grow up with the financial foundation he had to build on his own. He thinks about the entrepreneurs sitting across from advisors who are not really listening. He thinks about the version of himself at twenty-two, overwhelmed and unsure who to trust.
Because here is what he believes about money. Money, managed well, is not the point. It is the means. It is what gives an entrepreneur the freedom to live the life they actually dream of, to build something lasting, to be present for their family, to choose their own path. That is the whole reason this work matters. When the financial side is handled, everything else opens up.
And there is one more thing he understands, because he has lived it. The life of an entrepreneur can be lonely. You carry the pressure, the decisions, and the risk, often without anyone beside you who truly gets it. We are entrepreneurs too. So we are not just here to manage your money. We are here to be in it with you, to support you through the hard stretches and the big wins alike. He built Breakaway for all of them.
Breakaway is Patrick's vision, but it runs on a team that shares it. These are the people who carry the weight with you.
